Why Network?
There are two main reasons people set up a network in their home or office:
- You have multiple computers. With a network, you can share your files, music, and movies between all the computers on the network. You can even print over the network from any computer!
- You want to access the internet or networked computers wirelessly. We can set up a secure wireless network for you in no time. This will give you the freedom to use your laptop to access the internet from wherever you want to. You can also connect desktop computers anywhere in the building without wires. When we set up a wireless network, we make sure that it is a secure wireless network. This is the most important part of a wireless network. Without security it is possible for someone to access your network, and your files, from anywhere within range of the network.
EquipmentTo set up a network, you will need a router. These days, most routers are wireless. Routers allow you to connect four computers using CAT-5 network cables, and you can connect many wireless computers. There is almost no noticeable difference between the wired and the wireless computers. The router connects to your cable or DSL modem. From there it splits the internet signal to any computer connected to it, wired or wireless. We then set up each computer to share designated files with all of the other computers. Your network is then complete.
To connect a computer to the router using a network cable, the computer will need a network interface card. If the computer was purchased within the last eight years, there is a good chance it has a built in network card. If you happen to be using an older computer that doesn't have a network card, wired network cards are very inexpensive.
To connect a computer wirelessly, the computer will need to have awireless network card installed. All new laptops, and most late-model laptops come with a built-in wireless network card. Many new desktops come with them pre-installed as well. If your laptop doesn't have one built-in, we can either install an internal wireless card or an external wireless card for you.
Many new printers also come with built in wired network cards, or wireless network cards. If your printer doesn't have one, don't worry about it. You will still be able to print over the network as long as the printer is connected to a computer on the network.
We then set up each computer to share designated files with all of the other computers, and change the printer settings so you can print from any computer. Your network is then complete.
We prefer to use Linksys equipment when setting up your network. Sometimes the equipment costs a little more, but in our experience it is worth it. The security features are the same in most brands, but Linksys seems to get better range and are built better. We once Duck-Taped a Linksys router back together that a refridgerator had fallen on and smashed. It still worked!
That being said, don't hesitate to call us if you have already purchased another brand of network equipment. We have installation and set up experience with all brands. |
